Lotus Notes 8 is a major upgrade to Lotus Notes with a new user look and feel. The client is now built on an open standards, Eclipse-based architecture that allows for greater flexibility for customization, thereby fitting better into the service-oriented architecture that IBM proposes and supports. Version 8 release that early adopters tend to use. It brought in all the features but did require some improvements, included in the 8.0.1 and 8.0.2 releases. Both these modification levels made dramatic improvements on the memory footprints and the user interface.

The IBM Notes 8.5 is a client-server cross-platform application runtime environment which provides an interface to the IBM Notes & Domino software. IBM Notes can be used as an email client without an IBM Domino server. The IBM Lotus Notes 8.5 can now be used for the e-mail, as an calendar, PIM, instant messaging, Web browsing, & other applications. Notes can access both local as well as server based applications.
The IBM Notes 8.5 provides the business collaboration functions, such as email, calendars, to-do lists, contacts management, team-rooms, discussion forums, file sharing, microblogging, instant messaging, blogs, & user directories. The IBM Notes can also be used with the other IBM Domino applications & the databases. IBM Notes 9 Social Edition removed integration with the office software package IBM Lotus Symphony, which had been integrated with the IBM Lotus Notes client in versions 8.x
